One Good Thing by Georgia Hunter

In 1941 Emilia Romagna, Italy, Lili and Esti have been inseparable since their days at the University of Ferrara. When Esti has her son, Theo, the bond between them deepens, and the two women become as close as sisters. But as war rages across Europe, Mussolini's Racial Laws target Lili and Esti as descendants of an 'inferior' Jewish race. Despite the growing danger, life continues—until northern Italy is invaded by Germany, and everything changes.

Esti, older and more confident, persuades Lili to flee with her first to a villa in the countryside, where they help shelter a group of young war orphans. Then, they escape to a convent in Florence, where they pose as nuns and use their skills to forge false identification papers for the Underground. But when tragedy strikes and Esti is critically injured, she makes a heart-wrenching request: that Lili take Theo and run, putting everything on the line for his survival.
