Sister Europe by Nell Zink

Sister Europe is a captivating and heartwarming novel set against the backdrop of Berlin’s elite society. The story begins with a grand literary celebration honoring the renowned author Masud al-Huzeil for his lifetime achievement in Arabic literature. However, the event quickly takes an unexpected turn.

Naema, an elderly princess devoted to her causes, finds herself stuck in Montreux due to illness, unable to host the gala she had planned. With RSVPs trickling in slowly, she pleads with Masud to help round up attendees at the last minute. Masud reaches out to his old friend Demian, a Berliner, who invites his closest friends: Livia, a troubled yet innocent soul, and Toto, an American publisher willing to do anything for a free meal. But Toto shows up with more than just his appetite—he brings along his elusive internet date, known only as "the Flake," and Demian’s rebellious teenage daughter, Nicole. There’s also a cop tailing Nicole, a consequence of her recent actions in the red-light district.

Overseeing the evening is Naema’s wealthy, disenchanted grandson, Prince Radi, whose flirtation with Nicole leads to a spontaneous midnight food run that shifts the course of their lives in surprising ways.

With wit, tenderness, and a sharp eye for detail, Nell Zink crafts a story that delves into the complexities of an eclectic group of characters, navigating a world full of contradictions. Sister Europe showcases Zink's signature blend of humor, daring, and poignant insight, taking her storytelling to exhilarating new heights.
